Neurotheology: This Is Your Brain On Religion : NPR

principles-of-neurotheology

Akin to the program I mentioned yesterday—Can Science Be Sacred—here’s a segment that aired on NPR the other day—this one on the subject of Neurotheology, which is essentially the study of just what goes on in the brains of individuals who practice some form of spiritual study, such as meditating, praying and the like.

Relatively new to the realm of scientific exploration, Neurotheology is revealing direct changes that go on in the grey matter of those who exercise their spiritual faith, and the various benefits observed from these studies.

Bottom line, it’s a really good listen—please give it a spin:

The Loony-verse

My buddy Elliot passed this along to me today:

Scale of Universe – Interactive Scale of the Universe Tool.

I particularly enjoyed the micro/macro extremes, since they clue you in on specifics you might otherwise be unaware of or forget.

Enjoy!

Can Science Be Sacred?

by Mr. E! on 12/21/2010 at 12:59 am

Listening to WPR* the night before last I caught a program called To The Best of Our Knowledge, which was asking the question, “Can Science Be Sacred?” —the final segment of a five-part series entitled Science & the Search for Meaning.

To The Best Of Our Knowledge

Can Science Be Sacred?

I was impressed with the serious tone with which the topic was addressed, especially since the interviewed ‘guests’ all possess academic backgrounds and yet were comfortable sharing some of their more subjective, esoteric life experiences. Their varied accounts reveal how such mystical moments have inspired them to endure in their efforts to bridge the seeming gap between cold, empirical precepts and our sense that something incredibly profound is afoot in the natural order—a sense that carries one beyond the confining realms of our rational mind…into the wondrous frontiers of our imagination.

This is an hour long program anyone can download and listen to for free from the program’s website,

* Wisconsin Public Radio

Enjoy!

Tonight: Lunar Eclipse Coincides With Winter Solstice, 2010

Lunar Eclipse

Lunar Eclipse on Winter Solstice, 2010

Tonight marks an opportunity to witness quite a rarity—a lunar eclipse that is synchronized with the winter solstice. Supposedly the last time one of these came around was in 1638—worth taking note of.

If you’re like me and follow astrological forecasts then you might be interested in checking out Lunar Eclipse in Gemini, composed by Austin Coppock, an astrologer who knows his $#@!

Get outside after the witching hour for a great look of what may be a rusty-red moon—assuming we’re fortunate enough to get clear skies. Chicago’s lookin iffy.
